NYFW recap: Karen Walker SS16 ‘Star City’

Please and thank you Ms. Walker

From metallic and denim styles, to star-and-striped prints, Karen Walker definitely channelled a diverse aesthetic for her SS16 collection, Star City.

The secret Soviet Union training base that launched the first satellite, dog and man into space, known in English as ‘Star City’, was inspiration for Walker. She wanted a combination of ‘folk’, ‘utility’ and ‘glam’ in her designs.

With visual suggestions of propaganda, space technology, Star City’s elite class and the threads worn at Soviet discos, this collection embodies chic style and a world of colour.

Metal clasps, zips and topstitching were coupled with denim, poplin and parka nylon. There were also hints of romantic embroidery, muslin and rustic-style silhouettes. Together they fuse the traditional, folksy and utility-inspired theme seamlessly.

Looks range from subtle essentials to absolute show stoppers, and a selection of infamous Karen Walker shades indicate big shapes and bold colours are on trend for the warmer months.

Please and Thank You Ms Walker.
