Next gen designers: Ben Lalic

Fashion’s new class.

There’s only a couple weeks until the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival kicks off for 2016 and we’ve got a bunch of reasons why we’re excited.

One of these is that we’re Supporting Partner of the VAMFF National Graduate Showcase, Presented by Target.

So we’ve been spending a lot of time getting to know the creative talents that are the 12 finalists. And we think you should too.

Meet Ben Lalic, from UTS.

Describe your grad collection in three words

Technical, athletic, woven.

What was the most challenging thing about the creation of your collection?

Deadlines.

If you could design an outfit for any person alive or dead, who would it be and what would it look like?

Lucky Blue Smith. He always dresses well, so I guess it would have to look good.

What is your favourite song to play when working on your designs?

‘Coin Laundry’ by Lisa Mitchell and ‘Dancing On My Own’ by Robyn.

Is there a designer you aspire to be like or look up to?

If I were to compare myself to a designer, then it would have to be Christopher Shannon. However, I don’t aspire to be like any other designer, because I want my work to have its own point of view and unique look.

Where do you think the gap is in the fashion market?

Menswear. There’s a huge gap between suit attire and a casual T-shirt and shorts. That’s where I aim for my work to fit in. Innovative, casual and smart.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Looking to start my own label, having both worked for an emerging designer and completed a master’s degree.

If you weren’t into fashion design, what would you be doing?

To tell you the truth, I wouldn’t know. Maybe either studying vet science, event management or pursuing a sporting career.

What fashion trend do you most dislike?

Tie dye.

Favourite fashion moment?

Jean Shrimpton at the 1965 Derby Day in Melbourne.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to study fashion?

If you get accepted, just push through the first year, regardless of how bad it is. After that you’ll truly know whether or not it’s suited to you.
