Childish Gambino: Awaken, My Love!

Take us back.

When another reviewer promises you “Pink Floyd meets R&B”, you expect big things. And when that album is from Childish Gambino? Perhaps even bigger things.

Thankfully, right from the first few minutes of opener ‘Me and Your Mama’, this album really does deliver on that monumental promise. ‘Have Some Love’ and ‘Boogieman’ take us back to funk in the ’60s, while ‘Riot’ channels Prince.

However, some of that experimental flavour wanes as the album progresses. Instead of a sequel to Because the Internet, it probably acts as a prequel. It’s primal, intuitive and brave – as opposed to fully formed and ultra-modern.

That retro vibe, however, seems to suit Childish perfectly.
