Book review: So Sad Today

For all its sadness, this is not a depressing book.

You may or may not be familiar with Melissa Broder’s twitter account, @sosadtoday. It started as an anonymous account through which Broder shared daily, melancholy observations.

As people related to her words, Broder’s account grew. Now we have a book.

So Sad Today is a series of short personal essays, shedding light on the darkest corners of Broder’s life. Multiple addictions, sexual fetishes, eating disorders and a permanently ill husband are just some of what’s discussed throughout. But for all its sadness, this is not a depressing book.

Instead it’s strangely comforting to have someone write openly and with acceptance about their anxieties, doubts and insecurities.
