Next gen designers: Rose Church

Fashion’s new class.

There’s under a month until the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival kicks off for 2016 and we’ve got a bunch of reasons why we’re excited.

One of these is that we’re Supporting Partners of the VAMFF National Graduate Showcase, Presented by Target.

So we’ve been spending a lot of time getting to know the creative talents that are the 12 finalists. And we think you should too.

Meet Rose Church, who studied an Advanced Diploma in Fashion and Textiles and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fashion at Curtin University.

Describe your grad collection in three words:
Assemblage. Obsession. Discord.

What was the most challenging thing about the creation of your collection?
Starting. You know how much you are going to give yourself to the process, so giving into that and letting go can be difficult.

If you could design an outfit for any person alive or dead, who would it be and what would it look like?
An oversized art smock for Yayoi Kusama, so that she could put paint all over its surface.

What is your favourite song or album to play when working on your designs?
It’s not usually music, it’s more noise…. generally a film I’ve watched a thousand times and am able to have on in the background. Without actually watching, I know exactly where it’s up to and what’s happening. I suppose it’s balancing that sense of familiarity with the unknown, while working on conceptualising surface and silhouette.

Is there a designer you aspire to be like or look up to?
There are definitely designers who I respect, in terms of progressively changing and altering our perceptions of fashion: Yohji Yamamoto, Rei Kawakubo and Martin Margiela.

Where do you think there is a gap in the fashion market?
I have to believe that there always is, and will be, a gap for designers reinterpreting and aspiring to communicate new ideas through fashion.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully closer to the elusive dream. Working within a design team, collaborating with other creatives and working on my own personal projects.

If you weren’t into fashion design, what would you be doing?
Either illustration or surface art. I’ve always loved to draw and am completely obsessed with texture and the way surfaces can be manipulated to compromise their original form. Both play an important role in the design process for me, however, they are also other media in which we can further communicate through surface, other than garment.

What fashion trend do you most dislike?
Fast fashion.

Favourite fashion moment?
April 1981, Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo held their debut show in Paris.

What advice you would give to someone wanting to study fashion?
Be passionate. Be resilient.
