Jesus and Mary Chain: Damage and Joy
A shimmering introduction.
I’d like to say that I discovered the noise-pop pioneers at the tender age of four when Psychocandy was released.
However, it was actually a re-release of 1987’s Darklands on vinyl, in a dingy basement, that caught my attention. I haven’t been the same since.
Now, 18 years later, J&MC have released a new album, along with the quote: “Most people who know us, would say that we haven’t mellowed that much.” With Damage and Joy, they certainly haven’t.
The opener, ‘War and Peace’, may lull you into a false sense of security but by the second track, they’re in full force and better than ever.
If you’re a fan, it’s good news. If you’re not, it’s a shimmering introduction to their stellar back catalogue.
