Interview: Nicole Kae

We caught up with TONI&GUY Artistic Director Nicole Kae to unlock the secret to a perfect women’s cut.

We caught up with TONI&GUY Artistic Director Nicole Kae just before she jetted off to do hair at London Fashion Week. Nicole shares her tips on the choosing the perfect cut and some sneaky styling tricks.

Tell us a little about your role at Toni&Guy…

I’m an Artistic Director based at TONI&GUY Newtown and I’m a educator for TONI&GUY Australia and label.m. I love my role in the company, having the benefits of teaching like minded hairdressers and also catching up with my clients and giving them a fresh look. A haircut is your ultimate fashion accessory. It can make you feel so good!

What are the key elements to a good women’s cut? And do they differ for long and short hair?

First and foremost suitability. What will flatter their features, their style and their lifestyle.

What kind of style have you created on our model Phoebe?

With Phoebe’s hair I wanted something that was effortless. Maintaining a lot of length, working with long shattered layers, and shorter pieces through the front, to open up her face more.

It’s important to realise you can have a change but also keep your length.  The style has a beautiful casual feeling, with versatility through the front area.

I wanted to give Phoebe the option to wear a middle part for a casual look, or flick over to the side and feel a bit more editorial and dressed up.

How regularly should readers visit their salon to maintain their cut?

Definitely every six weeks to maintain the shape.

What tools and label.m products did you use to create this look?

label.m Protein Spray to provide moisture and de-tangle the hair.

label.m Sea Salt Spray, worked into wet hair and dry hair, to give a beachy, effortless and undone feeling.

label.m Soufflé which is a super soft cream based wax, to use as a finishing product. It’s scrunched into the hair, to pump up the volume and bring out the texture of the haircut.

Why should girls choose a Toni&Guy salon for their next cut/treatment?

At TONI&GUY, our number one focus is to make sure you walk out feeling a million dollars. Working as a specialist salon, our staff specialise in cutting or colouring, so you experience absolute optimum competency.   TONI&GUY is on top of current trends with our product range label.m, being the official sponsors of London Fashion Week, our products are researched in a true fashion environment seeking innovative textures to create on-trend finishes.

How much does a women’s cut generally cost?

Between $85 – $125 for a qualified stylist.  The varying price depends on who you see, and their level of experience.

How can our readers re-create the final style at home? Any tips for an on point blow dry?

To re-create this blow-dry at home the label.m products listed above are essential. Section the hair into inch sections and blow-dry with a medium sized round brush, working a twist technique down the hair.

Alternatively apply label.m Sea Salt spray to damp hair and twist the hair tightly in sections with your fingers, and dry the twists. When you unravel the hair will be kinked in all the right places.
